Our Escape Adventure Part 13: Michigan Madness!
Greetings from Colchester, Vermont! We’ve started our foray into the northeastern United States, but first we need to bring you up to date on our Michigan shenanigans.
At last, something we have been waiting for months - the next season of TERPECA is starting. For the sixth time, the best escape rooms in the world will be selected. This year TERPECA has also announced changes that may affect room qualification. What are these changes?
Rooms that were open for at least one month between November 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023 are considered for nomination. A similar rule has been in place in previous years. The change to be noted is that a room must also be playable in English at least for one full month. This means that this year escape rooms that open no later than October 1, 2023 which are available in English at this time can be qualified.
What is important, the room must be available in English throughout its existence. TERPECA writes in its latest announcement:
‘For a room to be eligible, its operator must intend to continue offering English-language play as long as the room is open. We may even retroactively remove rooms from the results if they become unavailable in English.’
Top Escape Rooms Project Enthusiasts' Choice Award (TERPECA), is an attempt to find the best escape rooms around the world. The project started in 2018 and was led by 70 people. Then 25 best escape rooms and 10 best companies were selected. Last year's TERPECA was attended by 955 contributors, over 900 rooms were nominated, of which the top 100 were selected.
Each year the project grows, and new rules of nomination and voting appear. This year's rules for joining TERPECA, room nominations and voting will be published soon.
Editor-in-chief, Writer
Journalist and indologist by profession. Writer, marketer, tarantulas keeper and urbex explorer by heart. In the meantime I’m playing escape rooms and board games, and I wonder how I find time to sleep (still dunno). I was born to write - my favorite forms of expression are extensive articles preceded by a long research, and horror stories (for some it’s the same).

Even with a huge budget, you can fail by organizing a competition in a field that is specific, niche, and that needs to be well understood. Escape rooms are definitely such a field. An entertainment that globally emerged only a dozen years ago has already seen a sports movement. Red Bull was the first to organize such championships, but it is now the Poles who are behind the most popular games.
